Honestly, people.

I am really disappointed with the lack of quality work I have been encountering on dA lately. (For those of you people that I watch, it's probably not you. I watch you because I like your work.) It becomes frustrating when you see people getting blind praise for poor pieces when what they could truly benefit from is strong critique. It also bothers me when I receive half-assed critique from people who clearly do not understand basic lighting, composition and editing elements (as evidenced by again, the lack of quality in their pictures). No one is naturally good at photography (or any art for that matter, but you see a lot of confused souls in the photography area because it is "quick and easy"). Great artists take millions of shots and think about each one. They go through them time after time and take the time to learn about their contemporaries and those that influenced them to begin with.
They, however, do NOT take a bunch of snaps really quick in lamely "interesting" poses and slap them online by the hoardes. NO no no.
Another pet peeve = taking a raw image, converting it to black and white (all while probably ignoring simple tone and contrast edits) and picking out one item and making it in color. Wtf people. We can have a discussion about this if you want. But seriously, grow a pair and take some time and EFFORT with your images.
I'm not saying my photography is the best ever, not even close. What I am saying is, I know I try hard, and if you look through my body of work, you see progress. I learn from every photo shoot I do and I work hard to further my skill.

All that said, scraps are for WIPs and other fun trinkets that may not be a final piece. Your gallery is for FINISHED pieces. Not 80 raw shots from a shoot that you didn't even LOOK at after you snapped the photo.

Almost Summer

Thu May 1, 2008, 8:50 AM
Sooo.
The school year is nearly done, which actually kinda sucks. I have so much left to do... and so little time... then everyone goes back to their hometowns for the summer. Except for half of my hometown friends who are working far away. LAME.
But some things lately are quite exciting:
I won 1st place (in the student section) for an art show for Around the Corner: [link]
I am working with 3 other students to create a large inflatable sculpture. There will be pictures and they will be sweet.
Plans for this summer include LOTS of movie making with silly historical themes.
The weather is nice again... which means biking and running and walking and sitting in the sun instead of going to crappy history classes.
YAY :D

New Things.

Fri Dec 21, 2007, 11:56 AM
I haven't been photographing in a while. The only time I've even picked up my digital lately is to take a few snaps of the duck foot someone had in my dorm, and to take quick pictures of gouache+tempera paintings I did for class.

I've thrown myself into a new style... painting on photoshop. I can't say I totally know what I'm doing yet... but the final products are looking pretty decent.
I am on a 2 1/2 week break from school right now, and I am quite sure that although I brought my tablet home... I left the pen for it at school! I live pretty close to school, but they shut down over break, so I would have to shell out 25 bucks to get it.
Being a broke-ish college student, I must now sigh loudly, "OH WELL".
Catnapfairy is allowing me to borrow hers for a few days though. I will be working nonstop with the tablet at this point.

I think I'd like to crank out a few good digitally painted pieces and possibly work on selling stuff. I still don't know how to go about doing that.

I'd like to ask that if you look at my page, let me know what you think! I'd love to hear some feedback. Thank you :D

I've started a list of things that fascinate me, or at least that interest me. Hopefully this will keep any art block at bay...
